Witness: Man beheaded on Greyhound bus
RCMP says 'major incident' took place on bus from Edmonton to Winnipeg
By SUN MEDIA

RCMP officers investigate a "major incident" that occured on a Greyhound bus Thursday morning about 18km west of Portage La Prairie, Man. (THE CANADIAN PRESS)

RCMP say they don’t know what prompted Greyhound slaying Day decries bus stabbing as one-of-a-kind in Canadian history

PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE, Man. — A man was stabbed to death then beheaded on a Greyhound bus in an apparent random act of violence, according to an eyewitness.

All lanes of traffic on the Trans-Canada Highway remained closed Thursday morning west of Portage la Prairie as the RCMP investigated what they would only refer to as "a major incident" on the bus that was headed from Edmonton to Winnipeg.

At about 8:45 p.m. the vehicle was stopped in the eastbound lane following an apparent assault.

Garnet Caton, one of 37 passengers on the bus, said he witnessed the attack.

"We all heard this scream, this like blood-curdling scream," Caton told CBC Newsworld.

He alleged the suspect had a "large hunting knife" and repeatedly stabbed the victim "like 50 or 60 times."

"The attacker was calmy over top of the victim continually cutting him. I think the victim was gone at that point," Caton told the CBC.

He said the victim appeared to be sleeping before the attack and the suspect was not acting out of the ordinary.

The bus was evacuated, but Caton said he was one of a handful of witnesses who saw the suspect allegedly trying to behead the body.

The suspect later appeared at the front of the bus, he said.

"He calmly walked up to the front (of the bus) with (the victim's) head in his hand and the knife and then dropped the head in front of us," Caton said, adding he believes the suspect later returned to the back of the bus and was seen later "taunting police with the head in his hand out the window."

Caton said the suspect appeared calm.

"What struck me, it was like he was at the beach or something," he said.

The incident took place about 20 kilometres west of Portage.

A Sun Media reporter on the scene reported about three dozen people from the bus were standing outside the vehicle on the highway following the incident.

A female passenger said she heard screams and heard "there was a stabbing."

"They told us to get off the bus," said the woman who did not provide her name.

Another woman at the scene said the passengers were being evacuated from one bus and loaded onto another waiting Greyhound bus.

At one point, Mounties surrounded the bus with one officer standing just a few feet away from an unidentified man sitting in the driver’s seat.

A man was taken into custody after the standoff with police.

Portage RCMP Const. Dave Higgs, who was on the scene, reported "there was a major incident on the bus," and did not provide any other details.

"I can confirm there was an incident on one of our buses,"Abby Wambaugh, media relations spokeswoman for Greyhound Canada, said late Wednesday night.

Wambaugh said a management team would be waiting in Brandon to meet the passengers when they arrived "to take care of any needs they may have," including accommodation, transfers to other buses or even trauma counselling, if necessary. — With files from Canadian Press

Fuck..... Yeah I'll be takeing the bus like never... the victim got on in Edmonton and the killer got on in Brandon.... seriously if I have to travle and I can't afford to drive or fly I'm fucking walking......

this was a pretty ok flick, if not a little hamfisted.

CAST : michael chiklis is a good badass cop or stone superhero. but notsomuch when it comes to portraying a pained father who lost his daughter and was subsequently suspended from the force for drowning his sorrows in scotch. i don't mean to typecast the guy, he's just not believable in the role he had in this movie. and as a main character, with a bunch of screentime, this shows. lucy liu, who played the protagonist, helped offset this because she's pretty well awesome in everything i've seen her in, and this was no different. the only other a-lister here was carla gugino (who i just learned is the director's grrlfriend), and she had a very cool "kill bill" david carradine moment where the time had come for her to be killed and she just took it in stride, having a mellow conversation with her killer and accepting her fate. other than that, she was just another vampire.

STORY : i really liked the story here. like REALLY liked it. lucy liu gets made into a vampire, but rather than truly "becoming," she decides to kill all the other vampires, because she's pissed at them. so she's a vampire vampire-hunter. i dug that a lot. further to the way the story was shown, they did what a lot of REALLY good movies do, where they started in the middle and then flashed back to the true starting point. think "walk the line." that's always a big sell to me.

PLAYING WITH THE VAMPIRE MYTHOS : another part of this film that i enjoyed. i'm always a fan of moviemakers playing with what it "means" to be a vampire. what it does to you, what it gives you, what it takes away, how vampires "live," etcetera. in this particular instance, the vampires really weren't all that different from humans, other than being slightly stronger (FAR from "superhuman," though), and of course, undead. they don't even have fangs. the vampires in this movie wear pendants that are small, sharp blades with which they cutcha, and THEN get at the drink. and those small pendants are shaped like crosses, so there goes that part of the mythos, too. and in one scene, lucy liu was walking around in the daylight, though it was the first day of her vampirism, she was clearly uncomfortable in the sunlight, and later in the movie, she makes note of having to wait till sundown to take action. so this may have just been something that they took for granted. either way, the vampire mythos here was FAR more believable than in some other movies. at the same time, you can't just be playing all fast and loose with something like that, so i'd imagine that was a big killer for this movie to other viewers. not me, though.

outside of all those specifics, this was just an ok movie. lucy liu is cute as FUCK, so whatever, you watch it, and there's lots of blood and crossbows and knives and stuff, so it's definitely a vampire movie. but it's just a little stiff. it doesn't really have any flow or any pop. there was never a "WHOA!" moment, thematically or otherwise. it just kind of plodded along. the writer/director wrote the screenplays for both "snakes on a plane" and jessica alba's "the eye," so it's not like he's a dolt or anything, but this one just didn't pull it together.

i have to give it a sad 5/10 CLANKS! sad because i wanted to love it, but i never got past like.

i have a chest cold right now, and i wasn't that interested last night in watching anything that took too much effort, so i threw on the phantom menace. yes, nobody loves this movie, fine. i don't even love this movie. but as i sat there just letting a couple hours roll by, i started to have a revelation. this movie sucks because it almost rocks. let me explain myself. there were a couple of big complaints about this movie -- one, it didn't look like the "past" to "SWIV:aNH"s timeline. in fact, it didn't even look like the "PRESENT" to that timeline, it looked like a "future" to it. two, jar-jar binks. three, tooooooooo much cgi. all of these things came together with other, more vague qualities, to make this movie essentially a piece of garbage. but as i sat there last night not wanting to move or think, i got to realizing that it was ALMOST awesome. let me break that down...

first things first, the "past," "present," "future" problem. "SWIV:aNH" had a gritty, dirty, unfinished feel to it's machines, droids, even the wardrobes. and this had ... not that. quickly, let's look at the two female leads, which, i'll remind you, were both royalty. princess leia wore a white robe and some hair buns. queen amidala wore ... well, pretty much everything that was in the wardrobe tent, all at once. yes, i get that they were from two different planets and that they had different traditions and whatever and whatever. but there's gotta be some consistency, even within that reality, in order to keep the viewer engaged at a base level. ok, let's move on to starships. the millenium falcon, the slave 1 -- these were boxy and whatever's the opposite of aerodynamic looking. and rightly so, they're SPACEships. they don't HAVE wind resistance. but then look at the silver naboo starship from this movie! it looks like it could slice through a solid steel wall without slowing down! droids? yeah, again, look at r2-d2 as opposed to say one of the "roger, roger" droids. they look millenia apart in engineering. (truth be told, they COULD be, we just don't KNOW, dude.) still on droids, there's the 4-legged walker things that the trade federation has (i think they turn into ships), and the rolling security droid things. they were clean and smooth and they had delicate tips to them. as opposed to something like an AT-AT, which was a cumbersome legged tank. if you figure that those 4-legged ship things to be maybe a quarter of the size of an AT-AT, but then you watch it prance around all dainty on POINTED LEGS -- your brain cracks. basically, they had way too much sexy technology inserted into what's been long established as a completely rough-hewn universe. but wait. then what happened was that there actually WAS a bunch of shit that fit perfectly! the ship that qui-gon and obi-wan arrived on. that was totally old star wars. the podracers! sick, and old star wars. so what happened was that it ended up looking like an old star wars movie with new footage cut in. like the abhorrently butchered cuts that came out a couple years before. and everyone hated those "new" cuts so much (cause they SUCKED) that when they were subconsciously being bombarded by the exact same thing (old look cut in with new shit), they couldn't see anything but the crap they'd been lucasFed a few years prior. and they (and i) resented it and revolted against it.

after that, i mentioned jar-jar, who i think we can all agree was the most epic fail EVER, and we all know why -- he was stupid, for one thing, and his language only served to bolster that. also, he was cgi. (more on that later, as i mentioned above, that's it's own problem.) but something i realized last night in a haze -- his species was actually kinda cool. their ships unfortunately fell into the above problem, being both organic and mechanical, and looking WAY too "futuristic" to the timeline, but the underwater city, and specifically the king guy -- i actually liked. so again, here you have something that fits in with the mythos, but offset by ass. when qui-gon and obi-wan took jar-jar through the planet's core -- they got chased by a brand-aware three giant underwater creatures. and they were AWESOME. but yet, jar-jar was there. so again, same problem. what it all comes down to with that fuck for me is that i would have actually liked most of the scenes that he was in, if he wasn't in them. basically, jar-jar singlehandedly ruined that entire film for me. (there was other stuff i didn't like, but he was the biggest problem.)

the final thing i mentioned was "too much cgi," and that may have been the biggest problem, in my new realization. as i mentioned above, a lot of this movie fit right into the star wars universe and was welcomed by me. but then you have a digitized dewback and baantha at mos eisley, or jar-jar, or the criminally digitized jabba the hutt. and check it out, three of the things i just mentioned were not digitized in the original movies. so seeing them digitized now takes you back to that saarlac pit you got in your stomach when you saw jabba in the director's cut of "SWIV:aNH." it didn't belong. and it CERTAINLY didn't belong digitized. it took all the mystery off of the world they were trying to create. but worse than that, it took all the NOSTALGIA off the world they were trying to REVISIT. and that's a fucking crime. and even MORE disturbing was that it was obviously NOT a "let's just make it easy on ourselves" thing, because effing yoda was still a puppet. so fuck that argument. they COULD'VE done it, they simply CHOSE not to.

i have another thing i noticed, too, and this wasn't ever out there really as a general public complaint, so i think it's all my own thing -- imbuing the non-human characters with personality. it worked in the good star wars movies, with C-3PO and R2-D2. also with chewbacca. also with others. but in this one, it fell totally flat. check it out, we've already discussed that the biggest fail with jar-jar was that he was just stupid. compare that with the ewoks, another hated star wars universe creature. they were annoying, but they weren't STUPID. they were warriors in their own little way, and love it or leave it, they were way fucking better than jar-jar. maybe a better example is the droids, though. C-3PO was a pussy, sure, but he wasn't stupid. the "roger, roger" droids? STUPID. and when i say stupid, i don't mean "i didn't like them, so i'm giving them this descriptive to avoid having to 'splain myself." i mean "lacking in intelligence." jar-jar, and the "roger, roger" droids talked with a lack of intelligence, were clumsy, and generally over-lent the slapstick element. and that shit will not stand. i think lucas got confused somewhere along the line there and started seeing "personality" as equivalent to "stupidity."

i guess this isn't really a review as much as a revisit, in that i'm not gonna give it a CLANKS! rating. it sucks and everyone knows it. i'm just revisiting and seeing some things that i didn't see before, and gaining clarity as to WHY this movie sucked, without being one of the vague haters.
