(SG)f just turned me on last week to her favorite TVviaDVD program ever, "weeds." she's seen the whole series, and i think it's up to season 4 now, but i'm only through season 1 (finished last night). as i get through additional seasons, i'll review them here, by season.

the premise is crazy, and could only happen in california -- nancy botwin (mary-louise parker, looking MILFtastic) is a white suburban widow trying to provide for her two sons and make the mortgage. so she becomes a pot dealer. (this history takes place offscreen, and we're introduced to her lifestyle straight away in the first episode.) the REASON this could only happen in california is because (a) i'm not even sure pot's illegal here anymore -- at the very least, it's so low on the criminal priority list that a single mom would actually be likely to logically consider it, (b) the california suburbs are RIFE with old hippies and middle-aged professionals that regard weed as no more or less destructive than vino, and (c) you can get the best weed on the planet here. my point is that if this show were based in, say, pittsburgh, i wouldn't buy it. older, working-class (and especially east-coast) cities are full of people who "grew up" and don't "do" weed anymore. it wouldn't make sense. additionally, it allows for the story point of nancy losing some business at one point because people are starting to get medical cards, so they're buying fucking banana bread down at the dispensaries. there are no dispensaries anywhere but CA. wouldn't have ANY of that if not for the show's location, and that single story point is actually responsible for a great portion of nancy's business expansion. very relevant.

the main interest of the show, for me, comes from it's multiple levels of contrasting and interacting subject matter. firstly, you've got a privileged white woman who's trapsing down into the ghetto to buy bricks every few weeks. this, in and of itself, makes for a lot of good story points. her assumption that her provider will just front her some product when she's low on cash, for instance, is met with the shocking (to her) revelation that she needs to leave collateral -- in this case, her car. later, her wedding ring. she and her supplier are friendly, but as she comes to realize, not "friends." it's business. another interesting contrast is the fact that she's doing this in the first place to try and be a good mother. review that. she's dealing drugs. to be a good mother. it's insane. i love these points.

nancy, you come to realize through the course of at least this season, is actually kind of naive. as you can tell by the details i've laid out above, and by others you'll see if you watch it yourself, this first season is nancy's come-up in a lot of ways. at first she's slingin to moms and dads who, like most californians, just like to smoke weed now and again. by the time the season ends, she's a fucking DON. she's got underlings, a front business, muscle, and her area is COUNTIES big. AND she's starting to lean towards growing her own supply, which would be 100% profit.

because of the fact that the first season is so tightly constructed around nancy's growth, i'm really interested in seeing how they take it further. season two, i'd imagine, will be about her holding down her own show now, but reGARTless of when it happens, she WILL go into competition with her current hookUp eventually. it's inevitable. she's grown too fast. you can see it coming.

other characters on the show are outstanding, and i'll pay special note to doug (kevin nealon), who's her "morally questionable CPA," andy, her late husband's brother, who's a slacker but a good dude, and celia, her neighbor. celia has undergone a MAJOR character transition over the course of this season, from bitch to awesome. anyway, all those characters are rad, and they've introduced some new characters that i look forward to seeing grow over time. (doug, btw, is worth the whole show.)

not that the show's without it's fails, though. when nancy becomes involved in a turf war with the next dealer over, she placates him by fucking him on the hood of his car. then she sticks a BB gun in his pants and tells him to leave her and her family and her business the fuck alone. now, i admired that they showed the story point of her coming up against another dealer and having to manage that. but (a) pot dealers aren't typically gangstas, (b) her solution didn't seem like anything that would be worthwhile to him to lose out on thousands of dollars for, and (c) it seemed WAY out of character.

but whatever, you know, if that's the only shit you have to deal with, i can swallow it.

i'm looking forward to exploring this show and i hope it follows the same lines as "carnivale" and others who get BETTER with age, rather than the majority, who throw down one good season and then turn into shit.

we shall see, but 8/10 CLANKS! for this season and 10/10 CLANKS! for the premise! very original and cool.

well, jerry seinfeld just fell off my radar forever and ever amen. seems he's producing a realiTV show called THE MARRIAGE REF, which will see a couple in a spat, accompanied by "a team of celebrities (who) will provide commentary and a 'referee,' whose identity hasn't been determined, (who) will give the final verdict on who is right and wrong."

oh, COOL! more people selling out the most private section of their lives to the masses!

why would you do this, seinfeld? you were one of the funniest people ever to live! you made smart comedy, and it was simple. and now you're going to bring yourself down to this level? everyone and everything associated with realiTV is no better to me than that string of deep-belly phlegm that always ends up hanging off your lower lip after you puke. realiTV is the worst thing to ever happen to society, and this is right up there with "intervention" as the worst of the lot. i find it more offensive than school shootings, snuff films, kiddie porn -- i even find it more offensive than PETA ads, and that's saying something. it is fucking sick and it is fucking twisted and i can't believe that fucking SEINFELD is part of it. i fucking hate everything about him now. he can go fucking die for all i care.

The New Avengers have just witnessed the unveiling of Norman Osbourns Dark Avengers and yeah they ain't happy about it, not one bit.
The current line up for the New Avengers. Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Ronin(Clint Barton) Mockingbird, Ms. Marvel, Spiderwoman, Spiderman, Wolverine, and Captain America. so the plan is simple. Lure the DA to a trap and beat them up. unfortunatly the NA didn't know about Norman's alliance with The Hood and his cadre of super villians. so the trappers become the traped and that's when the coolest feature of the issue shows up. Each of the NA's (well Mockingbird and Ronin get one together) gets a page of their own done in the style of their own individual comic.

seriously this was a kick ass issue.

it was reported earlier this year that sam jackson might not be coming back as nick fury. and it's a good thing i didn't put much stock into that report, cause as it TURNS OUT, he's signed for fury in NINE MOVIES, including "the first avenger : captain america," "thor," "the avengers," and (pleaseGodLetItBeTrue) a possible S.H.I.E.L.D. movie. one assumes the remainder of the nine-picture deal includes sequels to all of the above.
