This year was a profound holiday season, because it was our first with young Z. I've always been more interested in the fun of giving gifts rather than the delight of receiving them, at least as an adult (that's a cocky sounding claim, but it's true: I'm fortunate enough to be able to find ways of funding pretty much anything I want, so gift getting, while often RAD in the creativity of friends etc is still not as fun as giving interesting things to others, a task i frequently fail but occasionally pull off) and this year, it was taken to a new level of fun because we have a child to pile the gifts onto, as it SHOULD be. We didn't go nuts, but there were some fun notes here and there I thought I'd share.

First, for my R3 Army, of course we have the proper number of nutcrackers at my wifebot's mother's house. Swiss nutcrackers. Stern!

This was a gift for Z, from our cats I think. It's a 5-fingered hand puppet glove with accompanying book, featuring the classic Beatles track '5 little monkeys'... which is neither by the beatles nor classic. However, it IS 5 monkey heads on one glove, and Z properly appreciates the sentiment.

Z loves this rubbery giraffe we got her when she was only a few months old, and it's been her longest-lasting toy to delight (she still gurgles 'yeaysh) when I whip it out; it's called Sophie, from a French company called Vulli)... you can see pics of it on Flickr. Anyway, I came across this bathtime variant, which is smaller, and seems stuck in an inner tube. Still happy about it. Still edible.

I gave Z this one, mostly to amuse myself. I could hardly wait for her to tear the wrapping (and eat it) to yell "NICE MARMOT!"

This was given to Z by a neighbor of my parents, and I was pleased to note it's a wrongrobot-colored horse with a suspiciously familiar brand name. ALLLMOST perfect!

Finally, the gift that has IronLung in fits, MONKEE BOWLING (sic)... here shown both boxed (the box art is sweet as) and in use!

I can't argue with the sentiment, but what a strange sign. It's like, why can't dogs be warm too? Effing discriminatory campfire practices!

Thanks to my sister-in-law, witness the latest in my robot collection: the big red and black R3 approved notRobbie what has sparkler guts and a mean disposition and eats prescription medication. AWESOME.

As part of my professional life, I observe and inspect elevators.
I look for brand-aware moments of course. A collection of them is forthcoming, in a specific format. But here's a cool shot. These are safety rings, cast into the concrete beam (or bolted onto steel members, like here) above so that men can hang cables off of them to catch them if they fall while the hoistway is under construction.

If you HAVE to use petrol, it's a sweet, sweet thing to use JUUUUST the right amount.

Especially when stuck in Bent Ankle, Middle of Nowhere California.

Found in Target while searching for last-minute wrapping paper.

Please note Paul Frnak is offering xmas cards this year that allow you, in a single aisle-cap, to have monkeys, robots, pirates, and bikes. Your needs are almost entirely fulfilled. Had Pepper Potts been adjacent, we'd be done.

One of the best movies ever, and not content to leave it at that, they do a reunion photo spread, just to remind the weak-ass movies of 2009 what's up???

More photos below, including a great action shot.

Just barely almost worth it. I mean, I LOVE that moto more than any other ever, inluding any I've owned and just ahead of Brad Pitt's low-slung beastie bike. But $499 or whatever for it? GAH. Now, the HUD almost pushed it into must-have territory. But that would lead to must-divorce territory, so I decline.
