As some of you loyal readers know, I’m not only an artist but an avid bike rider. I say avid because I not only like riding bikes… i LOVE riding bikes. Obsessively. I have eight of them, six of which i built. Anyway, this year, I’m doing the AIDS Lifecycle 2010 event here in California, which as you will read below, involves riding from San Francisco to Los Angeles, raising money for AIDS prevention and awareness. So take a moment to read on, if you can. And if you will be in the SF Bay Area at the end of the month, you can come out to our fundraiser at the Wild West Side bar and meet me if you haven’t already!
Thanks for looking, and for your contributions if you can make them…and please note, if you like my comic art and such, I’m running a few donation promotions, including sketches done in the What I Tole You! style ( http://www.whatitoleyou.com ) and full color character commissions per my usual work ( http://www.thirdraildesignlab.com/blog ). Ask me about these if you are interested.
:::
Information on AIDS Lifecycle 2010:
In June 2010, I’m riding 585 miles of gorgeous California coastline on a fixed-gear bike over 7 days, in order to raise money ($11M dollars a year for each of the last 3 years) for AIDS prevention and treatment, cure research and services for disenfranchised gay and lesbian youth in the SF Bay Area.
AIDS/LifeCycle is a fully supported, 7-day bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles, June 6-12, 2010. It’s a life-changing ride—not a race—through some of California’s most beautiful countryside. AIDS/LifeCycle is co-produced by the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center and the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and is designed to advance their shared interest to end the pandemic and human suffering caused by AIDS.
With that stated, I humbly ask you to look into your hearts and see if this is something that you want to give a few bucks to. if so, you can donate by credit card at this link — http://www.tofighthiv.org/goto/thom_chiaramonte
(if you’d rather write a check, there’s a link at the bottom of that page which will help you do so.)
and don’t forget, many companies will match their employees’ charity donations. If you work for one of these generous organizations, please make sure and give them your receipt so that you can see your gift increased! (just remember to do so in enough time to get the matching gift into the revenue stream before 6 June.)
Each rider must raise $3,000 before the event, and I’m riding with my buddy Blair as a team (The Team Lope Tyre Club) and we collectively raise $6,000 with a goal of higher than that… so everything helps!

hey TRDL/R3 army!
You may only know me as an artist, but I'm also a bike-rider, and here's some exciting news...
as many of you remember, ironlung PARTICIPATED in a charity fundraiser 585-mile bike ride called the AIDS lifeCycle in the summer of '08. it's an amazing event and over the last several years, it's raised over $11M/year for AIDS and HIV research and treatment.
well, this year, WR and IL are doing it together, as a team, and we're both doing it on fixed-gears. one speed and no coasting from san francisco to los angeles. this will be a brutal effort, one which could just as easily reward us with a major sense of accomplishment as with blown out knee tendons. but we are committed, and when we are committed, things happen.
our notification to you is two-fold, of course. one part of it is pride in our upcoming challenge. we're both really looking forward to putting ourselves into this feat and as always, we love sharing that stuff with you, the faithful TRDL/R3 army. but it is a fundraiser, and we're hoping to rally your help, even if that just means forwarding our information on to others. we know that asking for money is difficult and uncomfortable, but there's a lot of talented people here who may be able to auction off art or services or the like.
if you or anyone you know is interested in participating in such a way, they can go to PAYPAL and send their donation to wrongrobot(at)thirdraildesignlab(dot)com. we'll be splitting everything between the two of us, since we each have a minimum of $3000 to raise.
for our own part, we're hosting a fundraiser party at a great little bar here in SF, which will feature trivia games (complete with kickass prizes donated by generous folks), drink specials, and all sorts of fun. we're looking forward to it, and we hope it inspires you.
look forward to a full ride report sometime after 12 june, and thank you all in advance for anything you do to help us.
and wish us luck! we'll need it!

I've received a number of inquiries about the status of the Friends of TRDL Gallery project... just a quick update. I have one piece that is coming in a little late, and then have most of the gallery assembled, and will be featuring this on the next site update on the master site http://www.thirdraildesignlab.com soon. I'll let everyone know before hand, as I wrap up the names and file size checks and such. Hang tight!
Thanks again to everyone who submitted!

It's about half-way to the deadline, so if you haven't started your Friends of TRDL gallery project piece, now's a good time! Thanks to everyone who have sent me their stuff already! Here's the details:
Welcome to Third Rail Design Lab's first ever 'Friends of TRDL' gallery project!
The concept is simple: we're ramping up for some new releases this year, including new editions of the TRDL worldbuilding sourcebooks, a site gallery facelift, and a sequential art release. In the meantime, we've had a number of friends produce original art pin-ups based on various characters in the TRDL Universe, and they've blown us away. So, we decided to make it a thing.
For the next 33 days, we are holding our first ever open call for original art set in the TRDL Universe. The promotion is open to everyone: members of the R3 Forum, art collaborators we've worked with in the past, friends from outside of the comic genre, artist associates, you name it. As in keeping with the tradition of the art jams on our forum, any medium, and any skill level, are welcomed. We want you to pick your favorite TRDL characters and draw em up with 100% minimum awesome.
The Particulars:
What: The 2010 Friends of TRDL Gallery Project
When: 33 days, ending on 13 February 2010
How: Draw your favorite TRDL characters in pencil, pen, color; digital, colored pencil, Pentel, Prismacolor, oil canvas, whatever. The context of this project is comic art, so certainly color comic-style art is recommended, but anything goes that inspires you will work.
The Goods: Everyone who participates will have their work featured in Third Rail Design Lab trade dress on our main illustration site as a special gallery. In addition, we will select favorites from the pool and they will be included in hardcopy published work as a bonus section. In addition, everyone who enters will be given a promo discount towards upcoming TRDL merch. But we hope it's about the fun of an art project more than anything else...?
The Details:
- All work submitted for this project will remain the artist's own property; however, by submitting you will be granting us permission to use the material in web and print projects in a capacity related to this project. Your work will not be used for other purposes.
- Work may be submitted in physical or digital form. Digital files may be any file format, 300dpi minimum.
- Originals will not be returned. Well, they might.
- Keep the work PG-13 rated.
- Be respectful of the original material, and of other contributing artists. In general, be classy. If it's offensive to US, we reserve the right to reject the submission.
We hope that you've seen enough of our work in the last several years to have a sense of the Third Rail Design Lab original universe. We have published over 150 original characters and teams, with more or less the same amount in the can ready to be released. All of our work in the TRDL Universe is available as worldbuilding tools for artists and gamers on our main site at http://www.thirdraildesignlab.com, complete with universal RPG stats using the TRDL Carbon system, which is easily adaptable to other game systems as needed. All characters, teams, and stories set in the TRDL Universe are available to you for non-commercial use in your games. Our intent has been to publish worldbuilding tools for others to use in their games and art (as long as you credit TRDL for the material) and there's much more to come!
You can find TRDL Characters for your inspiration:
- On our main illustration site: http://www.thirdraildesignlab.com
- On the TRDL R3 Forum: http://thirdraildesignlab.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=63
- On the TRDL Blog: http://www.thirdraildesignlab.com/blog/ ... mythology/
- In your TRDL Sourcebook, which includes a timeline of events in the TRDL Universe, and detailed descriptions of the interconnected story that brings all these people together. A few copies are still available.
Please ask if you have any questions!
Also, those of you that have already produced TRDL character art, either in the jams or as fan art, will automatically be submitted in this project. Not that we don't want you to do something new!
Thanks for looking, and hopefully participating!

UPDATE: Please note, you don't have to keep your submissions under wraps. You can post them in the jams or in your R3 Member Gallery thread as desired. Or you can just keep them secret and send to us directly. I would prefer though that one way or another you email me the 300dpi version of your submissions at some point...
Thanks!
